Roads to Recovery: second serve of funding

Published 17th January 2020
Kilometres of sealed and unsealed roads in Wakefield will benefit from another wave of Federal funding.

Federal funding, with an allocation of $750,000 set to bring forward planned works. Additional Roads to Recovery funding will advance and expand on a handful of road projects, with the following works to be completed over the next two financial years:

2019/20

$175,000 – unsealed roadworks on Marola and Templeton roads
$40,930 – sealed roads maintenance
$160,000 – rip, reform and resheet on Barunga Top Road

2020/21
$300,000 – reconstruction of Mine St, Port Wakefield (from Walter St to East Tce) and reseal Walter St to Wharf Reserve
$25,930 – sealed roads maintenance across the district
$50,000 – unsealed roads maintenance and repairs across the district

Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid said the funding allocations – endorsed by Council at its December meeting – would support Council’s efforts to improve its road network.

“This is a welcome boost to our capital works funding and also to the everyday maintenance required on our roads,” Mayor Reid said. “It also allows us to bring forward scheduled works.

“As a small Council with a huge road network, we rely heavily on external funding to supplement the rates income that goes into our road construction and maintenance.”

Thanking the Federal Government, Mayor Rodney Reid said Council appreciated the extra funding package.

Council plans to spend over $40 million on roads in the coming 10 years and about 74% of Council’s capital expenditure ($4.9 million) this year will go towards the road network.
