Disability Access & Inclusion

If you need support reading this page Wakefield Regional Council has the Userway widget for you to use in the top left hand corner of this page, it can read the page for you but not the documents attached.

Council's Disability Access & Inclusion Plan (DAIP) is a 4-year plan to ensure our region is accessible and inclusive for people living with disability, their families and carers.

According to the 2021 Census, just over 585 people in the Wakefield region need assistance in one or more core activity areas – self-care, mobility and/or communication – because of a disability, long-term health conditions or old age.

The DAIP will guide Council from 2026-2030 with outcomes that will aim to ensure:

  • All people with disability can participate as equal citizens and feel connected in their communities
  • All people with a disability benefit from inclusive educational experiences, equitable employment
    opportunities and financial security.
  • All people with disability can access quality, tailored personal and community supports addressing
    their individual needs
  • All people with a disability feel safe, have their rights upheld and have full and equal protection
    before the law

What is accessibility and inclusion?

To make our community accessible and inclusive for all people we need to remove or minimise physical and social barriers. This includes barriers to participation in community events and activities, the operations of Council and the information, services and facilities we provide.

Accessibility of the built environment, services and information is key to ensuring people living with disability have the opportunity to equally participate in all aspects of community life. Social inclusion means the contributions and rights of people living with disability are valued and understood, promoted, upheld and protected.
