$650,000 big Bowillia Road renewal underway

Council’s longest road renewal in decades.

Almost 27,000 tonnes of gravel is on the move as Wakefield Regional Council takes on its longest road renewal project in decades.
Work is rolling along on Bowillia Road, located just outside of Blyth, where 11 kilometres of unsealed road will be resheeted as part of Council’s Asset Management Plan for 2018/19.
The project is just one of many that make up the plan that guides Council on which roads to renew based upon their age, traffic use and condition.
Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid said the $650,000 project would see almost 27,000 tonnes of gravel transported and laid to form the road’s structure.
“We decided to carry out the renewal in one go rather than spread it out over multiple stages to increase efficiency and save ongoing costs,” Mayor Reid said.
“The road has a high traffic volume and is frequently used by local farmers to transport machinery to and from nearby paddocks.
“Given this high traffic volume and long period since its last refresh, we are making this road a higher priority.”
Culverts will also be replaced and made wider to improve safety at the Kybunga and Schumacher Creek crossings at a cost of $70,000.
The road will be renewed from Sampson Rd to the beginning of Old Boundary Rd.
