Trees for our streets

Wakefield Regional Council is undertaking a new project to enhance key streets of the region’s townships.

The Street Beautification Project - which was endorsed by Council at last week’s meeting – will see avenues of trees planted in towns over the coming twelve years, subject to annual budget approvals. Small towns will be the first to benefit.

A list of appropriate species of trees has been prepared for each street based upon the species tolerance to conditions, maintenance needs, leaf fall and overall suitability to the area.

The project is to complement the outcomes of the Township Street Sealing Program, which both came to fruition as part of Council’s aim to provide quality infrastructure to the community.

Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid said the project responded to the community’s wishes for more ‘greenified’ streets.

“Council has a longer term vision for avenues of tall trees lining township streets,” Mayor Reid said. “We are enthusiastic about working with the community to ensure this project represents the aspirations and expectations of residents.

“To ensure the sustainability of this project we had considered the necessary ongoing maintenance of the trees, such as pruning and watering, and the care for tube stock.”

The plan is open to alteration based on feedback from our community, and the beautification works will be implemented progressively over the next 12 years.

Once consultation with residents in relevant streets is scheduled, residents will be able to request not to have a tree planted in front of their property.
