Here by popular demand - Chipblitz is coming to Wakefield!

Here by popular demand - Chipblitz is coming to Wakefield! Residents can get their dog or cat microchipped for just $10 in Balaklava on Saturday 9 June, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Held in the Council Offices, at Scotland Place, this is a great opportunity to get your dog or cat microchipped before the new laws come into effect on 1 July 2018. These laws require all dogs and cats be microchipped.

Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid said Council is glad to have teamed up with ChipBlitz because a lost pet which is microchipped is twice as likely to be reunited with its owners.

“This service is available for one day in Wakefield and places are limited so I would encourage interested people to visit the ChipBlitz website and book now,” he said.

“Collars are great but they can fall off. If your pet becomes lost, vets, animal shelters and councils can scan your pet for a microchip and find your contact details.

“A chip is only the size of a grain of rice and the procedure is quick, simple and no different to a vaccination.

“In cases where the microchipping procedure could cause a risk to a dog or cat’s health, vets can allow an exemption, so that owners avoid penalties after 1 July.”

Mandatory microchipping is one of four major reforms being introduced. The reforms also include mandatory desexing for dogs and cats born after 1 July, new rules for dog and cat breeders and sellers, and the introduction of a statewide database, Dogs and Cats Online.

“Your next renewal notice will be from the Dog and Cat Management Board – not Council. This is expected to come to your letterbox around 20 July 2018,” Mayor Reid said

“Once you receive your notice you can go to the Dogs and Cats Online website to pay .You can no longer pay via Council’s website or at your local post office, as done in previous years.

“However, if you need a hand you can visit Council’s office and speak to one of our customer service team.”
