Connecting community groups to potential volunteers

Published 28th November 2022

Wakefield Regional Council is working to support local community groups who need volunteers to fill their ranks.

Mayor Rodney Reid said Council was aiming to establish a local database of volunteer opportunities to help fill volunteer vacancies across community groups in the Wakefield region.

“We know there are volunteer pressures in our communities and some groups are struggling to get people involved in activities – from helping out in canteens, through to joining town committees.

“Our Wakefield 2030 community plan includes a priority action of creating a revitalised volunteer program that recognises and celebrates our volunteers and promotes opportunities. The database will be a first step to connect people to volunteering openings.

“We’re asking clubs who may be struggling to fill volunteer roles to let us know so we can help present future volunteers with all the opportunities available in Wakefield.

“The 2021 Census highlighted a 7.8% loss of volunteers across Wakefield since 2016 and a much broader drop nationally – we want to help bring our volunteers back to our groups they love and bring them back to playing an active role within their community.

“Volunteering can be one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have and we’d all love to see numbers increase again in the coming years.”

If any groups would like to be added to the database they can contact Larissa McPharlin on 8862 0800 or email admin@wrc.sa.gov.au.
