Council Seeks Community Feedback on Draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan

Published 1st December 2025

Wakefield Regional Council is inviting community input on its draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2026–2030, developed in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2018 (SA).

The DAIP outlines Council’s commitment to creating an inclusive region where people with disabilities can participate in community life.

It aligns with the priorities of the State Disability Inclusion Plan 2025–2029, focusing on five key domains:

  • Inclusive Environments and Communities
  • Education and Employment
  • Personal and Community Support
  • Safety, Rights and Justice
  • Health and wellbeing

The draft plan includes potential actions such as:

  • Improving accessibility of Council buildings, parks footpaths, and road crossings
  • Providing disability awareness training for staff and Elected Members
  • Enhancing communication accessibility through Easy Read formats and accessible digital platforms
  • Leverage existing local government networks and relationships to form a “working group” of people with lived experience of disability to provide input into the design of Council plans, programs or places

Mayor Rodney Reid said Council had already made great strides towards making Wakefield more inclusive, but there’s always more work to be done.

“We’ve had success by implementing accessibility features to our website, ensuring more access ramps are throughout our region for safer road crossing and begun making Council’s building’s safer and more accessible.” Mayor Reid said.

“Council, staff and the community all have a role to play in this plan over the coming four years and working with each other we’ll be able to create a more inclusive Wakefield.

“I encourage all residents in Wakefield to read the plan and have their say to help guide us as we continue to improve accessibility and inclusivity in Wakefield,” Mayor Reid said.

Community consultation opens on December 3, 2025, and will remain open until December 23, 2025.

You can read the DAIP on Council’s website at wrc.sa.gov.au or you can visit the Balaklava Council Chambers to request a hard copy version of the plan to read.
