Council to cut ribbon on new disability access cabin

The community is invited to ‘come and see’ Balaklava Caravan Park’s newest addition - a $96,348 cabin fully fitted for disability access.

An ‘open morning’ hosted by Wakefield Regional Council Mayor Rodney Reid will allow the community to peek inside the new addition and have a look around the park, which continues to be a major asset for the region.

Mayor Reid said plans for the new cabin came about when a local resident pointed out a general lack of wheelchair friendly accommodation available in the Wakefield region.

“The resident had friends with disabilities who wanted to stay overnight in the region but there was a real lack of wheelchair accessible accommodation,” Mayor Reid said.

“Council was surprised to discover this was the case, and so felt a strong duty on behalf of the community to provide accommodation with disability access in our region.

“One of Council’s main functions is to promote our region as a great place to stay – but if a lack of suitable accommodation prevents people from doing that, we are overlooking a big issue.

“Building more accessible accommodation will allow people with disabilities to visit Wakefield region with greater freedom, and participate more fully in our community and events.”

People are welcome to have a look at the cabin during the opening event:
When: Thursday 1 March, 10am – 12pm
Where: Balaklava Caravan Park – enter off Short Terrace.

“The opening is a great opportunity for those curious to see what the inside of the cabin is like – to see what it has in comparison to its neighbouring cabins,” Mayor Reid said.
