“Avon calling” – when “nature’s calling”. Toilet facilities at Avon Hall have had a facelift since securing funding through the Federal Government’s $1 million Drought Communities Programme.

This is one of four halls within regional settlements to score funds after Wakefield Regional Council sought support for a range of projects.

“We wanted as many parts of the district as possible to see the benefits of the Programme,” Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid said. “Smaller settlements often miss out but benefit so much from funding support.”.

The project was allocated $11,000 and the facility was able to receive a complete paint job, new non-slip floors and tiling.

Mayor Reid said regular users of the hall would notice a major difference, with the facelift making the facility, which doubles-up as public toilets for visitors, much more appealing.

“The Federal funding is allowing Council to add much needed resources and repairs to extend the lifespan of our smaller community hubs,” he said.

Avon local and active community member Jill Stewart said getting the phone call to say they received the funding was “like winning the lottery.”

“The toilets just look so much better now,” Ms Stewart said. “Everyone here at the Hall is really pleased with the work and that money is being put back into a local facility.

“The Hall is used for all sorts of events and gatherings on the community calendar – big or small.”

More drought community projects are nearing their completion – Brinkworth Museum security system, Brinkworth Hall solar system and Balaklava Town Hall solar installation, are a few that are expected to finish in the next couple of weeks.
