Former local leads BMX bash for region’s young people
Former local Ryan Lloyd is coming back to head up a free BMX event for the region’s youth, hosted by Wakefield Regional Council.
GET STOKED! held at Balaklava Skatepark on Tuesday 17 November 2020 will include freestyle demos from the talented Lighthouse Youth Projects crew, and the opportunity to get involved in plenty of come and try activities for all ages.
As Co-founder of Lighthouse Youth Projects (LYP) Ryan Lloyd is extra excited to be back in his old riding grounds and sharing his passion for BMX with a new generation, something he combines in his work as a youth mentor.
“I grew up in Blyth and it was great to have the support of older riders when I was first learning! Blyth locals Dan and Matt Richards would give me spare bike parts and teach me how to ride and get me to send the jumps that were probably too big for me,” Ryan said.
“I'm really excited to come back to ride and share the skills I have learnt with the local young people. Riding and travelling is just good fun 90 per cent of the time, and the 10 per cent of the time when it goes wrong, with injuries and time off the bike, you will learn so much about yourself and others.
“The GET STOKED! event is all about getting involved, meeting some new mates and enjoying bikes! Our goal at LYP is to share our love of bikes and have fun.”
All helmets and bikes will be provided on entry to the event, or your welcome to bring your own. There is also free food and free music on offer by local DJ Holzy.

Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid said the event had been postponed from Youth Week in April due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“This event is about celebrating our young people here in Wakefield, after what has been a challenging year,” Mayor Reid said.
“GET STOKED! has been partly funded by Youth Week SA and we look forward to seeing everyone involved and having fun, no matter your skill level.
