Spring cleaning ahead of Hamley Bridge's big birthday.
Wakefield Regional Council is doing some Spring cleaning around Hamley Bridge before its 150th birthday celebrations kick off this month.
For the past few months, Council has been sprucing up Hamley Bridge with some focused works in its CBD - Light Street – and other works happening town wide. This includes footpath upgrades, clearing and pruning back overgrown trees, as well as an associated revegetation program to beautify Light Street’s median strip.
Wakefield CEO Jason Kuchel said Hamley Bridge would be a hive of activity with an exciting line-up of events and activities going to happen from Friday 28 September to Sunday 30 September.
“We’re preparing for the celebrations,” Mr Kuchel said. “We’re tidying up the town here and there, getting it ready to show off to visitors from outside the Wakefield region and the broader community.”
“There’s going to be a vintage car parade, live music, history displays and delicious local food on offer.
“The old railway town is packed full of character and we’re really happy for Hamley Bridge where the community is coming together to celebrate this momentous occasion.”
Looking to the future, Mr Kuchel said Council had some developments on the table for Hamley Bridge.
“A new entry statement sign designed by community members will be installed this financial year, and a new playground at the Hamley Bridge Community Sports Ground is currently under construction,” Mr Kuchel said.
Wakefield Regional Council has invested $40,000 towards the new playground but an additional $10,000 was also raised by the Hamley Bridge Community & Sports Centre Committee Inc. The project was guided by a community engagement process, with residents submitting their ideas and suggestions and later contributing to the final design.
Other future plans are coming together so Council can work towards fulfilling aspects of the Hamley Bridge Community & Sports Centre Master Plan. This includes a refurbishment of the overnight stay park and facilities like a designated dog park or a versatile open space for sports and recreation.
“We’re still in the planning stage of determining what this area will look like, but we are really keen to work with the community again and understand what they want from this precinct before we get shovel ready,” Mr Kuchel said.
