Koolunga Road to benefit from $750k of funding

Published 23rd October 2023

Wakefield Regional Council has secured $750k in funding for road reconstruction works on Koolunga Road, Brinkworth.

The project was one of five that shared in $4.6M of funding which Legatus was able to secure from the Supplementary Local Road Program (SLRP).

WRC Mayor and Chair of Legatus Rodney Reid said this was a great win for our regional communities.

“Koolunga Road will be fully reconstructed from Brinkworth to Boucaut Road intersection by stabilising the existing base and applying two coat spray seal, this will create a wider transport corridor, ready to support future higher mass vehicles and primary producers,” He said.

“Improving the width of this freight route will ensure future safety and eliminate the risk of vehicles having to drive over the centre line into oncoming traffic on narrow sections of the road. Other safety features will also be upgraded with new line marking and signage.

“Koolunga Road was identified for works due to its deterioration with sections of the roads spray sealing breaking off, potholes and narrowing of the road’s surface.

“Funding like this is an excellent way for us to proceed with projects early and stay focused on upgrading our road network throughout Wakefield.

WRC will contribute $750k on top of the $750k bringing the total cost of the reconstruction to $1.5M, with the project set to be completed by 2025/26.

Council received funding from the SLRP grants in the 2017/18 round of funding that supported works on Mail Road.

“We’re very thankful the funding we received through the Special Local Roads Program will go towards creating a safer road network within our Council.” Mayor Reid said.

“As Chair of Legatus, it’s excellent to see we secured this funding for our region, with Light Regional Council, Yorke Peninsula Council, Copper Coast Council and Wakefield Regional Council sharing the $4.6M.”
