Wakefield Regional Council is inviting people to play a leading role in shaping the region’s first community garden.

All those interested are urged to come along to an information session hosted by Council in Balaklava. This will be an informal session to discuss the project and form its management committee.

The committee will be a small core group of volunteers who will oversee how the garden is managed and maintained in the long term.

Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid encouraged all who are interested in “digging in” and seeing the garden grow to head to the information session.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to be a part of something great in our community and a chance to embrace a new or old hobby,” Mayor Reid said.

“We’d love to have people join the committee who have a real passion for gardening and like meeting new people, but who are also willing to see this project last in the long term.”

The project has been propelled by several dietetics students from Flinders University who, as part of their degree’s requirements, undergo a six-week practical placement with Council.

Georgia Brockman, who is in the final year of her degree, is currently onboard to see the project progress.

“The garden will be an exciting addition to Balaklava and its surrounding communities,” Georgia said.

“We envision that this will be beneficial for the health and wellbeing of local residents and in promoting social inclusion.

“If it’s successful we may look at bringing the project to our other towns.”

If you are going to attend the information session please make sure you RSVP to Georgia Brockman – broc0044@flinders.edu.au or 8862 0800.
