Port Wakefield local and former Wakefield Regional Council employee Michael Rankine has been elected unopposed to fill Council’s Central Ward vacancy.

Councillor Rankine, who has lived in Port Wakefield all his life, was a Wakefield employee for 17 years – most of those spent in key infrastructure roles. He retired as an employee in October last year.

Councillor Rankine has served on numerous local sporting and community organisations as a volunteer and his nomination focused on a desire for ‘good governance’ and serving the interests of the whole community.

Mayor Rodney Reid said he was looking forward to Councillor Rankine becoming part of Wakefield’s elected body.

“He has an excellent local knowledge, a deep understanding of how local government operates and a passion for the community – all great qualities of a Councillor,” Mayor Reid said.

“I know over the past 17 years, Councillor Rankine has worked hard to deliver on community expectations and has built an incredible knowledge of the region, its infrastructure and the wishes of its communities.

“On behalf of the other elected members and Council employees, I’d like to welcome him to the team.”
