Nominate now for your local Council election

Published 1st July 2022

LOCAL Government Elections are fast approaching and Wakefield Regional Council is encouraging eligible community members to step up for the chance to represent the region.

“Four months out from the election, we’re encouraging people to find out more about what it takes to be a Council Member and think about throwing their hat in the ring,” Wakefield Regional Council CEO Andrew MacDonald said.

“Elected Council Members have an opportunity to influence and shape how our region will develop into the future and to help our communities thrive.

“They will set the direction, decide on policies, represent ratepayers and ensure the interests of the Wakefield community are looked after through the plans we deliver.

“It’s really important we have a diverse group of Council Members who can represent all walks of life in Wakefield and we encourage women, young candidates, people living with disability and people with a range of experiences to nominate.

“Elected Members create a direct connection between the community and Council, providing a voice to local residents, groups and businesses to help achieve our community’s vision.”

Candidate information forums will be held for interested residents to learn and prepare for what is involved in becoming a Council member prior to nominating.

Three sessions will be held at the following locations:

  • Blyth Town Hall, 26 July at 2pm
  • Hamley Bridge institute, 28 July at 2pm
  • Balaklava Council Chambers, 2 August from 5.30pm

To be eligible to nominate you must be an Australian citizen and, at the time the electoral roll closes, must be either:

  • Enrolled in Wakefield Regional Council area, or;
  • The designated person of a body corporate, or;
  • A group that has its name on the Wakefield voters' roll, or;

Nominations are open from 9am 23 August to 12 noon on 6 September.

Wakefield ratepayers will have the opportunity to elect 10 Council Members – a Mayor, two South Ward Councillors, three North Ward Councillors and four Central Ward Councillors.

“Anyone who would like to vote in the upcoming elections should ensure they are included on the Wakefield electoral role by Friday 29 July,” Mr MacDonald said.

Ratepayers will be posted voting packs in late October – these will need to be returned using the postage paid envelope supplied before 10 November 2022.
