Nominations for the Citizen of the Year Awards are now open. This is an opportunity to think about those special individuals and groups within our region who make our communities great, and nominate them for the awards.

Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid is encouraging residents to nominate so more people can receive credit for their hard work.

“I know every community, every town, every school, every group in the region has somebody giving their time to help others – it would be great to see them nominated,” he said.

“We want to see the biggest pile of nominations ever this year – nominations from all parts of Wakefield."

In January this year, Diane Spence was awarded Wakefield Regional Council’s 2017 Citizen of the Year. Di was recognised for her many contributions throughout the Wakefield region, such as her long-standing experience as Coordinator for the Red Cross and her support during the Pinery bush fire.

Event of the Year 2017 was awarded to Friday Food Drop – an initiative by Balaklava Church of Christ - which sees a group of volunteers organise surplus food from metropolitan supermarkets to then be handed to almost 50 needy families in and around Balaklava.

To nominate go to the Australia Day Council of SA website (www.citizenoftheyear.com.au) or council website (www.wrc.sa.gov.au).
Nominations close on Friday 17 November.
