Wakefield Regional Council is celebrating an outstanding honour for its Australia Day Community Event of the Year selection.
After SA Country Women’s Association’s (SACWA) Plains on a Plate was selected as Wakefield’s 2018 Community Event of the Year, Council nominated the group for the State level of the awards.
SA’s Australia Day Council has now named Plains on a Plate South Australia’s Community Event of the Year – an award to be presented by the Governor of South Australia, his Excellency Hieu Van Le AO, in a ceremony next week.
“We are so proud the SACWA has won this honour for what was an incredible event,” Mayor Rodney Reid said. “It’s especially more joyous when you consider all the hard work, time and long preparation that when into the event and what inspired the group to bring the community together.”
Mayor Reid has lived in the town of Owen, which played host to the event, for more than 20 years and said Plains on a Plate was a significant turning point for the whole community following the devastating Pinery fire.
“It brought significant happiness and raised the community’s spirits after a difficult period,” he said.
“It was an event that brought together not just members of our Wakefield community, but also visitors from other regions and interstate.
“On behalf of Council, my sincere congratulations to the CWA and everyone else who made this event come to life.”
