Pool projects taking shape – launch dates delayed
MAJOR works to transform Balaklava Swimming Pool into a regional aquatic hub and upgrade Owen Swimming Pool are forging ahead, with the exciting new splash pad feature at Balaklava now complete.
TPS – which has been engaged by Wakefield Regional Council to deliver both pool projects – has advised steel shortages and COVID impacts on its workforce mean there will be delays of about 6-8 weeks to the scheduled timeframe for opening the pools to the public.
However, Mayor Rodney Reid said there was significant progress still being made on the sites, including:
Balaklava:
- Splash pad complete
- Main pool shell concreting almost complete
- Learn to swim pool water reticulation pipe work installed and the pool shell backfilled and concreted
- Balance tank form work complete and ready for concreting
Owen:
- Concrete aprons around pool shells removed
- Scum gutters removed
- Excavation of trenches around the main shell complete
Filtration units and pumps for both pools have been delivered to council’s depot ready for installation.
“We’re excited about how the pools are taking shape and, while news of a delay is disappointing, we’ll continue working with the pool committees to make sure people are enjoying these significant community assets as soon as possible,” Mayor Reid said.
“The delays are beyond the control of Council and TPS. We are not alone as the issues impacting the pool delivery are being felt across many 2022 construction projects, particularly those relying on steel.
“Initially we were anticipating a September launch for Balaklava and November for Owen but both dates will now be pushed out. TPS is confident Balaklava will be able to open by late October, while Owen will be ready by late January.”
Council is convening an operational partnerships meeting with pool committees in mid-August where it will discuss a range of opportunities to work with the committees, as well as arrangements for summer given the delays.
