Wakefield Regional Council supports community-led project to develop a commemorative mosaic couch in memory of Pinery fire victim, Janet Hughes.

Initiated by the Hamley Bridge Community Association, the project titled ‘A Seat for Janet’ was established to create a permanent commemorative piece in memory of Janet Hughes, a valued member of the community lost to the events surrounding the Pinery fire on 25 November 2015.

The commemorative piece includes a rendered concrete couch with a mosaic throw rug, to reflect Janet’s love for quilting, located in the local park of Hamley Bridge.

Council supported “A Seat for Janet’ by preparing the site for the commemorative couch.

In early April, a two-day community event was held to provide an open opportunity for family and community members to contribute in making mosaic tiles to be placed onto the rendered couch. This event was funded by the Barossa Foundation and Bendigo Bank.

Assistance was provided by members from wider community groups who had been involved in assembling several mosaic couches that currently exist in the Northern Adelaide Hills as part of The Community Mosaic Couch Trail - a community program developed by the affected communities of the Sampson Flat Bushfires.

Mayor Rodney Reid stated, “Council is happy to support these initiatives, particularly when it affects the wider community. I commend the Hamley Bridge community for their initiative and creativity in remembering Janet appropriately.”
