Wakefield Regional Council’s Signage Replacement Program is being accelerated after Council approved a $10,000 boost to funding for this financial year.

During Council’s Wednesday night meeting last week, it was decided to bring forward $10,000 from future budgets, making the program now worth $50,000 in 2018/19. Extra funding will allow all faded road and street name signs to be replaced throughout the district.

Wakefield Mayor Rodney Reid said the additional funding would provide another 250 signs on top of the 1,000 already planned for this year.

“We see this as a crucial program,” Mayor Reid said. “Faded road signs are unattractive and more importantly they create difficulties for road users trying to get around the region, as well as posing some risks to emergency vehicles dispatched to homes and businesses.”

“It’s a commitment Council and staff share to always provide quality infrastructure to our residents. We’re eager to get on with the job, replace the faded signs and get it done and dusted as soon as possible.”

Mayor Reid said Council had received growing concerns from the broader community over the faded signs.

“Signs facing the sun suffered the most fading,” Mayor Reid said. “Getting the signs replaced in one big hit will resolve the issue, but also bring some peace of mind to those residents whose roads and streets have one of the marked-to-replace faded signs.”

The Signage Replacement Program is part of Council’s 2018/19 budget and was endorsed this July.
