Tender awarded for Port Wakefield Master Plan Design
AWARD winning engineering and landscape architecture firm GDstudia has been appointed to deliver detailed designs for the first stage of the Port Wakefield Master Plan.
“This is an exciting step towards injecting new life into one of the state’s hidden gems and showcasing the remarkable heritage of the town,” Mayor Rodney Reid said. “Detailed design is a critical step towards having a major ‘spade ready’ redevelopment of the town’s waterfront, incorporating the historic former railway refreshment rooms/RSL building, caravan park and Edward Street and to assist Council in leveraging grant funding.
“Port Wakefield will become a tourism and lifestyle destination as our plan seeks to draw travellers off the highway to discover new attractions and enjoy the town’s wonderful history, while delivering exciting new features for residents to enjoy.”
In its draft 2022/23 Annual Community Plan Council has earmarked a $1M budget to fund the initial stage of the project, including $500,000 of Council funds, matched by $500,000 from the Federal Government’s Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Program.
The initial scope of works will include integrated designs for the priority projects identified in stage one of the Master Plan. Key features will include:
- Edward Street greening and beautification to create a ‘spine’ to encourage visitors to the waterfront and the town plaza development. Work will include street furniture, lighting, landscaping, tree planting and wayfinding signage from the highway.
- Riverfront playground and town plaza – incorporating a repurposed RSL building – to create an active cultural hub with potential to host regional events and local markets.
- Caravan park upgrade with landscaping, potential realignment of the entrance and integration with the playground and RSL areas.
“This detailed design work will be undertaken with community input so that GD Studia can capture the Council and community’s shared vision for Port Wakefield and take us a step closer to making it a reality,” Mayor Reid said.
GDstudia (formerly GREENHILL) has delivered numerous high-profile and award-winning projects across SA, including main street upgrades, sport and recreation hub developments, land developments and integrated housing and landscaping projects.
“We’re thrilled to be awarded this exciting project, and look forward to collaborating with Council and the wider community on such a transformational upgrade,” GDstudia Principal Landscape Architect Amy Prince said. “Our team has reviewed the existing Master Plan and the extensive community consultation, and are excited to build upon the feedback and work done to date. We truly believe this is one of the states hidden gems, and we look forward to showcasing all that Port Wakefield has to offer.”
