Unsealed road renewal roll out begins ahead of schedule

Published 9th June 2022

FOR the second year in a row Wakefield Regional Council has closed the gap on its unsealed road renewal program with Council’s infrastructure team getting the green light to commence 2022/23 works ahead of schedule.

Council approved the early commencement of its 2022/23 unsealed road renewal works program at the May Council meeting as there were only four kilometres of remaining works in the 2021/22 unsealed road renewal program.

Mayor Rodney Reid said it was vital for the works to commence early to maintain the productivity and progress the Infrastructure team had been making over the past two years.

“With the increased efforts of the past few years, our teams have managed to reduce the backlog on our roads by about $3.6 million – or almost 80km – on top of the annual road plans,” Mayor Reid said.

“The reduction in our unsealed road network backlog over the past two financial years has shown we are committed to improving our network.”

With 65% of the rubble already raised for the 22/23 unsealed roads program, Council will now start carting rubble from pits across Wakefield to kickstart the unsealed roads program.

“Roads such as Bumbunga Road and Weckert Road will all begin earlier than previously expected, with rubble already being carted to these roads,” Mayor Reid said.

“Accessing these rubble pits earlier in winter will help maintain productivity before wet weather sets in and the pits become hard to access due to excess water.”
