Wakefield Regional Council has once again been titled the Best SA Regional Council Campaigner for National Asbestos Awareness month.

Each year leading up to National Asbestos Awareness month governments, businesses, associations and individuals from all over the nation are invited to help increase awareness of the dangers of asbestos and educate the community at grassroots level.

In 2016, 539 councils throughout Australia registered to participate, the highest number of councils since the launch of the campaign in 2012.

Wakefield Regional Council was recognised to be the Best SA Regional Council Campaigner due to the commitment to educate staff and the community about the dangers of asbestos.

Council hosted ‘Betty in Balaklava’ a purpose built, mobile model home designed to demonstrate where asbestos might be found in and around any Australian home built or renovated before 1987. Council staff, residents and the media were invited to visit the model home whilst Council held a Blue Lamington Drive in support of the campaign. Additionally, the Council foyer and Council website displayed effective asbestos awareness information for residents and ratepayers.

Mayor Rodney Reid was actively engaged in the campaign and spoke to the media about the importance of the community being aware of the dangers of asbestos in and around the home.

CEO Jason Kuchel stated, “Preventing asbestos-related diseases in Australia is important ongoing work. With collaborative council support, each community can be directly informed with significant impact.”

Council won a similar award during the first year of participation and plan to continue involvement in upcoming campaigns.
