Wakefield wants to hear from you on draft Bridges and Stormwater Plans

Published 24th October 2024

Now is the time to have your say on Council’s Infrastructure Asset Management Plan for Bridges and Stormwater.

Council has been undertaking reviews of all our Infrastructure Asset Management Plans with consultation for our Transport Plan complete and our Community Waste Management Systems Plan adopted.

Up next in the reviewal process is Council’s Infrastructure Asset Management Plan for Bridges and IAMP for Stormwater.

Council maintains 11 vehicular and pedestrian bridges within our network.

Of these 11 bridges the draft plan proposes the replacement of Kybunga Road Bridge with a culvert system, the decommissioning of three bridges; Adrian Clark, Old Whitwarta (already closed to vehicles), Quinlan Bridge and guard rail renewal works for Watchman Road Bridge.

The draft plan for Stormwater has a clear strategy for maintenance, renewal and upgrade of Council’s stormwater network.

The stormwater network currently includes;

*           13,990m of township drains

*           622 township nodes (side entry pits, junction boxes & headwalls)

*           2,632m of township spoon drains

*           1 township detention basin

*           8,548m rural drains

*           1,212 rural nodes (headwalls & vertical walls)

*           27 rural floodways

*           541m rural stormwater safety barriers

*           1 footbridge

*           3 flood monitoring stations

Since the implementation of Council’s 2021 IAMP for stormwater, Council has spent an average of $237,848 per year (adjusted to July 1, 2025 figures) on rural and township stormwater renewal, these upgrades are spread evenly throughout towns and rural areas.

The draft Stormwater plan also identifies areas needing investigation, design and construction to resolve drainage and flood mitigation issues.

Both proposed plans build on the work already undertaken since the implementation of the last plan in 2021, while continuing to meet service levels and the renewal of assets.
