WRC’s Community Support Package approves $300K across region

Published 11th August 2020

Wakefield Regional Council, through its COVID-19 Community Support Package, has approved almost $300K to successful applicants across the region.

Launched in a South Australian-first during the thick of the pandemic, when Government restrictions caused many businesses and clubs to shut their doors, it was introduced as a way to steer the community through uncertain times.

Under the Package, a full remission of fourth quarter rates was offered to those struggling to make payment. Council received 39 remission applications in total, or $17,191 in dollar value.

“Council felt that it was in a good financial position to offer this line of support to those who could not make payment, as a result of COVID-19,” WRC Mayor Rodney Reid said. “It’s important to remember that everyone was struck differently – and unevenly - across our region, and this was a step we decided to take for anyone significantly impacted.”

The Package has also supported 29 clubs and community groups by effectively wiping away utility bills for six months, and 42 businesses with grants available of up to $5,000.

“Taking care of utility bills helps to alleviate some financial burden from our communities’ shoulders and the $5,000 for businesses has gone towards small enhancements, to update technology, or for professional advice on marketing and finances.

“Applications are still open and can be made through Council’s website.”
